How should I go about asking for a day off of work?

kjd93 Asked: How should I go about asking for a day off of work?

I am starting my first job next week. Earlier this week was scheduled for an orientation but was set back due to computer issues, but while i was there the manager (my boss) said that if any of us have a day that we can't work we should ask as soon as possible. My friend and Ialready bought tickets for a concert in the beginning of June, and the concert is Sept. 3rd.I was wondering if I should try to ask about getting that day offor working an earlier shift at the orientation or after I start working? The place I'll be working at is a casual grill and bar restaurant so I don't know how serious they are about their part time workers asking for days off. All I know is that I will have to ask at least 2 weeks in advance. I also have no kind schedule yet since my first day of training won't be until next week. Any advice at all would be great.

What part of "ask as soon as possible" is confusing you here?????

You need a whole day off to go to a concert? Asking for an earlier shift would be better than taking the whole day off. Ask Monday, even if you don't have to go in to work that day, call the manager. Your interest in resolving this ASAP will pay dividends in the future. Don't say it is for a concert, family member having a medical procedure, getting married, grandparents 50th anniversary, whatever.
